What is Gastroesophageal Reflux?

Coughing and throat discomfort may be symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), although it is not the only possible cause. GERD is a common digestive system disorder, typically caused by the backward flow of stomach acid or contents into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that connects the throat to the stomach, serving the primary function of transporting food from the mouth to the stomach.

Under normal circumstances, the lower part of the esophagus has a muscle ring known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which can close after food passes through, preventing the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus. However, if this sphincter loses its normal function or becomes relaxed, stomach contents, especially stomach acid, can reflux back into the esophagus, leading to Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Other Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux:

  1. Persistent coughing and hoarseness
  2. Difficulty swallowing or eating
  3. Increased saliva, becoming thick or foamy
  4. Sensation of a lump or discomfort in the throat
  5. Feeling that something is stuck in the chest
  6. Nighttime asthma (common in asthma patients)

4 Effective Methods for Rapid Symptom Relief:

For mild gastroesophageal reflux, the following methods can help alleviate symptoms. However, if you experience prolonged discomfort from gastroesophageal reflux, it is recommended to seek prompt medical attention for professional diagnosis and treatment.

1   引用温水

Dilute stomach acid to reduce irritation.

2   调整姿势

Change from lying down to sitting or from sitting to standing to keep the upper body upright, lowering pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter and reducing the likelihood of acid reflux.

3   放松衣物

Unfasten belts or remove tight clothing to alleviate abdominal pressure.

4   调整睡姿

Sleep with a raised pillow or lie on the left side to help minimize the occurrence of acid reflux.
